Resolving Resolutions

We are one week into 2019 – how is it going for everyone? I remember being in 2nd grade and hearing the year 2008 or 2012 and thinking how far away those were. 20 years later, and we are in 2019. Cuh-razy. I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday season and are starting off the year right. Of course most people are resolving to lose weight or be more active so the fitness industry is in big business now haha. And while most gyms and health food store are super busy this month, for me it’s a little different. I don’t have a gym membership so my apartment gym will work just fine. Or running outside at the park (I have yet to do those this year because it’s dang cold).

As far as food, I have started my 3 month Keto challenge –kinda. It was more of a 60/40 of being good and not. But this week we are living in, I am challenging myself to do better. As a recap, here is what my challenges are this year:

  • January through March – Keto Diet to the fullest extent

  • April through June – Vegetarian Lifestyle

  • July through September – Vegan Lifestyle

  • October through December – Meal Replacement Shakes with One Meal per Day

For the month of January, while on Keto, I will be doing an intermittent fasting where I will increase my period of fasting each week. Last week, I did only eating from 8am-8pm. This week is 10am-8pm. Next week is 12am-8pm. I will eventually get to where I will only eat within a 6 hour window! I’m actually quite excited about that J

There was an article that talked about different diets and which ones were the best, quickest to lose weight, etc. Keto came in 3rd I believe for the fastest/safest way to lose weight however everyone always mentions how it’s unsustainable and you can it back. But isn’t that the same with any diet and not sticking to it? The report mentioned that the best diet overall and is physician approved is the Mediterrian Diet. I have always wanted to try it but it seems slightly expensive – maybe I was looking at the wrong thing. I may try it in my Vegetarian phase.

Other than the updates above, I wanted to talk about resolutions. It seems that people have strong opinions on doing them and not doing them. I think the beginning of a new year, month, quarter, week, is always a great time to start over or start fresh. And I think one of the reasons are so against doing resolutions is because some people tend to obsess about them and end up not actually “resolving” the goal. So then why do them and why in January? According to Wikipedia (which is much more reliable than it used to be y’all), a New Year’s resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their life. AND the Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus. The Roman god, Janus, was the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, and endings. Also, Christians used to prepare for the year ahead by praying and making resolutions during watchnight services.

Interestingly enough, less than 50% of people actually come up with resolutions. And in a study, 35% of the people who failed their NY’s resolutions admitted to having unrealistic goals. And I am absolutely guilty of that in the past. I used to calculate up how much weight a person should lose each month (let’s say 10lbs, 2lbs a week) and then multiply that out by 12 which equaled 120lbs. Well so that means I could lose 60 by June. And it never happened. I would start strong and then fall out after February. The only nice thing is that this blog will keep me honest and on target (hopefully) but I also made resolutions to do some sort of run or race at least once a quarter. So that should keep me on, right? I plan for quarter 1 to be sometime in March so if you know of any, send them my way. But those are the things you have to do to keep your motivation moving, little check-ins or mini-goals, to help you along your way. And I’ve come to learn that if you pay for something, you’re gonna do it so you don’t lose your money. Although, I have signed up for the Hot Chocolate Run here in Dallas for about 4 years in a row (and it’s expensive y’all) and I’ve never run it haha. The swag is really nice though.

What are some of your resolutions this year? Do you call them resolutions or goals? Do you write them down and quantify them or just keep them in your head? I am curious because I want to see what works for other people. I used to think I was the person that had to see the information and the goal in my face all of the time and I’m really not. I barely look at the calendars I write stuff down in or the posters I put up in my room with goals or dates. I think Apps on the iPhone help since I look at my phone a lot but other than that, it’s a conscious decision making type thing.
