FRIDAY! It is finally here. It’s been a hot 100°+ here in Dallas all week. Hitting record temps of 112°, 110°, 113°. Crazy.
I wanted to talk about what to do if you want to complete an outdoor workout but are faced with high temps.
- Hydrate. Drinking water throughout the day along with having some during your workout is crucial. You don’t want to be dehydrated (in general) because it will lead to not so fun results.
- Light clothing. Now this is a two-fold statement. Light as in not heavy, lighter weighted material, nothing clingy. But also as in light in color. You do not want to be wearing black, navy, red, or anything with lots of color. I go for white and light grey. It’s a whole science thing on light absorption 🙄
- Electrolytes. Most of this is through salt. Make sure to have something that will replenish your electrolytes when you are done. One thing I used to do in high school, which is kind of super gross, was while running or working out I would grab the collar of my shirt and put it in my mouth. After a bit, I would literally be sucking the sweat out of my shirt – but it was because that’s where all the salt went! 😷🤢
- Weather outlook and time of day. We have been under an excessive heat advisory the last few days. So me running or working outside any time, basically from 10:00am until 8:00pm is out of the question. I read somewhere that it’s suggested to workout outside during the 3:00am to 6:00am timeframe. Ha…ok.
- Sunscreen. Don’t forget it! I use a sport sunscreen on my body, neck, and ears and use a different one for my face (I have very sensitive skin). Super important because you don’t want any issues coming up from being in the sun so much.
These are all great tips! I rarely run outside nowadays. I live in Vegas and our weather has been topping the 100’s since the beginning of June. I’m jealous that you have a 5k in August. I can’t seem to find a summer one. Maybe because it’s too hot. My next one is in October, at the end. I can’t wait! I really just want to run one. I love the rush!

August is still pretty hot lol. Honestly it doesn’t cool down here until about October. It will still be kind of warm during my 5k, which is nice.
